Managing Bookmarks on the iPad

Have you ever found your self searching for the same website over and over? Or what if you find a really cool site and don't want to lose it?

All you have to do to make your life a lot easier in these situations is bookmark the site! There are a couple different ways to bookmark on the iPad, but no matter what route you take, you can rest assure that the site will always be accessible without the repetitive searching or accidental loss.

Step 1: Open Safari

Open up Safari on your iPad. A screen should pop up that looks like the one below.

In the "Search or enter website name" bar, type in the website that you would like to bookmark. Get to the place that you would like to have book marked. For the sake of this blog, I will be bookmarking the College Board's website.

Step 2: Get the Drop Down Menu

Once you have reached the site you would like to bookmark, click the small icon that is next to the search bar. It is a small box with an arrow pointing up in it (like the image depicted below).

From that icon, a drop down menu will appear as depicted below. From here, there are a few options on how you can bookmark. You can select "Add to Reading List" (the glasses icon), "Add Bookmark" (the book icon), or "Add to Home Screen" (the icon with the dark box and the plus sign in it).

If you already know which way you would like to learn to bookmark, refer to the following steps and go to the one that matches your interest.

Step 3: Add to Reading List

Step 4: Add Bookmark

Step 5: Add to Homescreen

If you don't know which way you would like to bookmark, read all of the steps and select the way that works best for you. Please note that each step may be a bit repetitive as they can be read independently so some information may overlap.

Each step will show you how to add a bookmark and how to delete a bookmark using the method you choose!

Step 3: Add to Reading List

To add something to your reading list, press on the glasses icon (like the one depicted below).

Once you add something to your reading list, you can find it by clicking the book icon to the left of the search bar. Once you click on the book icon, there should be a bar that has the same book icon, the glasses icon, and an @ symbol icon. Select the icon with the glasses. The site will be there. The image below depicts the two icons that you need to click to access the reading list (the icons highlighted in blue).

If you'll notice, at the bottom of the drop down menu in blue writing it says "Show Unread." This means that you are looking at everything you have ever saved to your reading list. If you click the "Show Unread," it will change to "Show All." If you see the "Show All," it means that you are looking at only the sites you have not yet opened since you saved them to your reading list.

If you would like to delete something from your reading list, simply hold down the box that it is in until it turns a dark grey. Then, slide to the left. A red box will appear saying delete on it (as shown below). Click the delete and it will disappear.

Step 4: Add Bookmark

To add something as a bookmark, select the book icon (depicted below).

From the book icon, the drop down menu depicted below will appear. The first box allows you to name the bookmark whatever you would like. I'm naming my bookmark "College Board."

The box below the naming box has a URL in it. Do not change that box as it will change the site you are bookmarking.

Click on the locations box. Two options will appear, "Bookmarks" or "Favorites."

Location-"Bookmarks"

If you were to keep the location at "Bookmarks," you would click save up in the top right of the drop down menu. To find the bookmark, you would then click the book icon on the left hand side of the search bar. Make sure the book icon is selected in the heading bar of that drop down menu (as depicted below, both icons you would need to select are highlighted in blue). From there, the site you bookmarked should be in the list, and I can see in the image that mine is there.

If you wanted to delete the book mark, you would hold down on the bar until it turned a dark grey. From there, you would slide the bar to the left. A red "Delete" button should appear (as depicted below). You would select the delete button and the bookmark would disappear.

Location-Favorites

If you wanted to save the book mark under "Favorites," you would select that as your location instead of "Bookmarks." To access the bookmark, you would click on the book icon, then on the book icon on the heading of the drop down menu just like if you had saved the bookmark to the "Bookmarks" location. The difference is that you would now click the bar that says "Favorites," as depicted below (it is circled in black in the image but won't be on your screen). After clicking "Favorites," the bookmark will be there. To delete the bookmark, the process is the same as if you had saved it to the "Bookmarks" location.

Step 5: Add to Homescreen

To add a bookmark to your homescreen, select the icon that is a small grey box with a white plus mark in it (as depicted below).

From there, a drop down menu will appear that looks like the image depicted below.

Name the bookmark whatever you would like. I named mine "College Board." Do not touch the URL as that will change your bookmark to something you don't actually need. Once you have named the bookmark, click "Add" in the upper right hand corner. The iPad will automatically place the bookmark as an icon (like an app would be) on your Home Screen.

Deleting this type of bookmark is the same process as deleting an application off of your desktop. If you are unfamiliar with that process, please follow the steps below:

To delete this type of bookmark, hold down on the icon until it starts shaking. An "X" will appear in the upper left hand corner of the icon. Click it. A little box will pop up asking if you are sure you would like to delete the bookmark. Select "Delete" and it will be gone.

Congratulations!

Now that you have learned how to bookmark in different ways, you can pick the way that works best for you! Now, you can easily access any webpage you need with much ease and speed.
