Squarespace and Wix are two helpful tools that provide a variety of website templates for anyone looking to build a website without beginning one from scratch. Creating a website using either Squarespace or Wix can be helpful for a student in creating a portfolio for college, creating a presentation for an assignment, or just creating a website with a topic that sparks a student’s interest. This blog post compares Squarespace and Wix, giving the pros and cons of each. The purpose of this blog is to allow students to find whether Squarespace or Wix is best for them in their process of creating a website.

Wix:

There are many positives and only a few negatives to using Wix as a tool for building a website, presentation, or blog. Here contains some pros and cons of Wix:

Pros:

  • Signing up on Wix is easily done and has no restrictions. To sign up, go to www.wix.com and navigate to the white button in the middle of the screen that is labeled, “Start Now” where a white box will pop up and ask for your email as well as a password for your new account. Using Wix is free of any monthly fees unless you desire an upgrade, but an upgrade is not needed for most student projects or websites.

  • Wix has a variety of templates that can fit the needs of a website, presentation, or blog. To choose a template after you have created an account, simply click on an option that fits your topic best. There are options for a simple website or a blog.

  • Adding images, text, and buttons is fairly easy. After you choose a template, Wix has a menu on the left hand side of the screen that gives options to add images, texts, buttons, and pages. To add any of these features, find the icon that looks like an addition symbol and a drop down menu will appear with these features, as well as many more to choose from.

Cons:

  • The choice of templates isn't as vast as Squarespace, but there are still a fair amount of templates that can be chosen from.

  • Wix is not supported by the school iPads because they are older generation IPad Apple products. This means access to editing your website is limited to using computers and laptops.

Squarespace:

Squarespace is another website building tool that has both pros and cons:

Pros:

  • The process of beginning a website is just as efficient as beginning one on Wix. Go to www.squarespace.com and click on the white button labeled, "Get Started" where you will be led to a page that gives options to get a domain, create a website, or build a store. Click on the middle option titled, “Create a Site” and then pick a template that fits your topic best. If you are unsure of what you want but you would like to try out a few options, you can view examples of the different templates. Once you have chosen a template, you click on the black button titled, "Start With..." and the name of the template style, and create an account on Squarespace.

  • There are many options for website templates on Squarespace. After clicking on, "Get Started" you are directed to a variety of templates that can fit any purpose you are hoping to accomplish. The template options are also visually appealing because of the features they contain, including rolling background images and image galleries. The template options allow for creativity as well as organization.

  • Like Wix, Squarespace provides an easy way to add pages, images, and texts. On the left hand side of the editing screen, there is a menu that allows you to add and name a page. When on a page, you can click on any feature of the page and there will be an option to edit it. As you are typing, there are black lines with a bubble on the left side that if clicked on, can give an option to add media, such as images or videos.

Cons:

  • Although Squarespace has more template options than Wix, it is not free. Squarespace allows you to have a trial website that lasts approximately seven days. An additional seven days can be added to the trial if needed, but if you wish to keep the website, a fee is required.

  • Squarespace is not a self saving website. You must save all changes before exiting the site.

Both Wix and Squarespace are great tools a student can use for creating a website. If a student is looking for a free website tool but doesn’t mind a more limited choice of templates, than Wix could be be the best option. If money is able to be spent on a website that could last as long as student wishes to use it and a student is looking for a tool that has a vast variety of templates, Squarespace could be the best option. The decision depends on which pros are more beneficial, and which cons are more limiting. For any questions on either website, you can contact the tech desk team at:
