Moving Steam Games Between Hard Drives

Is a Steam game taking up too much storage and you want to move it off to another drive to save space? Well there’s great news! Steam just released an update that allows the user to move game install locations with just a few easy steps. No longer do you need to download an external program to handle it for you or trick Steam by verifying the game’s cache! It should be noted that this only applies to people who have bought a secondary drive for their computer whether it be a hard drive, solid-state drive, or an external drive.

So the first step is to open up Steam and then find the game you want to move. Right-click it and a drop-down menu should pop up. We want to select the “Properties” option at the bottom of the menu (highlighted in red).

Next we will go under the “Local Files” tab (highlighted green) and click on “Move Install Folders…” (highlighted red)

A prompt will show up and ask where you want to move the install folder to (highlighted blue). For me it’s on my secondary drive under a folder called ‘Steam Games’. Once you have selected where the folder will move to just click on “Move Folder” (highlighted red) and Steam will handle the rest!

That’s all there is to it. This is especially useful for people who install games on a drive temporarily and then want to move it to another drive to save space and avoid having to download the files again if they deleted the game. While this may seem like something that should have been added earlier, it is a very welcome change that many users have asked for.
