How to Easily Understand Shakespeare

When trying to read and analyze the brilliant works of this poet playwright, multiple students struggle with the aspect of trying to understand the sentence let alone analyze it. Are you a student who struggles to understand certain works of Shakespeare? You’re not alone. Currently, on the app store, there is an app that allows students to read the works of Shakespeare in a modern version. It allows you to swipe between the modern version and the original version, helping the student being able to read it in a language that they understand and compare the two writings, getting a full sense of how Shakespeare writes and hopefully get them to go right into the original version. It is free, and can be used as a great help within classrooms and for students. Below is how to use the app and make the most of it.

  • The app icon will look like this. After downloading, click on it and discover the possibilities.

- This is what the opening page will look like. Pick the category of the play in which the student wants to read.

- The category selected here was Tragedy. After clicking on the category, a list of plays will appear. Click on the one that students will read!

- The play selected here was Romeo and Juliet. After clicking on the play, it then gives students the acts and the scenes within that play. Find your students act then select the scene.

- Students will then get asked if you would like the original version or the modern version. If students want to read it in the context as a modern book would display, click on the modern version. If students would like to read the normal Shakespeare version, then click original.

- Selected here was Scene 1 of Act 1 of Romeo and Juliet. This is the modern version, and as students can see it is easy to read as if it were in modern time writing.

- While reading, students can switch between the modern version and original version. To do this, just hold down on the sentence and quickly swipe. The version chosen will be replaced with the other. This allows students to get a sense of how he writes by being able to see what it means, then analyze it and connect it to how he originally wrote it.

- Displayed here is the original version as if Shakespeare was to write it himself. These sentences were all swept over from the modern version, making it easy for the student to read and analyze. Happy reading!
